Plot: New York. Nina is a professional dancer whose life is completely absorbed by the dance. At the same time, the girl is dominated by the obsessive mother Erica, a former dancer who exercises control over her suffocating. When the artistic director Thomas Leroy decided to replace the etoile Beth MacIntyre for the opening of the new season of ballet, 'Swan Lake', Nina is his first choice, but instead may be superseded by Lily, a new dancer He appreciates in equal measure. In addition to the technical, 'Swan Lake' requires a dancer who can play a dual role: that of the white swan, graceful and innocent and that of the black swan, smart and sensual. Nina is perfect for the first role, but his obsessive quest for technical perfection does not allow her to pull out its most daring, necessary to characterize the dark character. Lily, however, though not a first-class dancer, still manages to embody both aspects of the character. The close competition and hard training will bring the two rivals to forge a strong partnership that will put Nina in touch with his dark side, a proponent of a dangerous and deadly unrest.
CRITICISM "(...) the director Darren Aronofsky at the Venice seems to have the subscription. (...) Returns to competition this year (and as the opening film) with 'Black Swan ', a hyperbolic travel within the psyche of a chorus girl (Natalie Portman already a Volpi Cup for the most incisive interpretation of his career) of a major company in New York whose life is completely absorbed by the dance. The camera, often in the shoulder and subjective, in the following manner with intense close-ups of their days drawing tests, dressing, dressing room wanted to see the look at the prima ballerina. (...) As in 'The Wrestler' is the competition of the bodies. But now there is a woman struggling with his own ghosts. Which of course may be declined outside the world of ballet. And therein lies the strength of the film that speaks to all those who are on the stage of life. Among agony and ecstasy. "(Pedro Armocida, 'Il Giornale', 2 September 2010)
" Applauded and booed in almost equal measure from the floor press, 'Black Swan' by Darren Aronofsky is a powerful concentration of themes and figures seen in a hundred other films, from 'The Red Shoes' to 'Eve' through 'What Ever Happened to Baby Jane' (and the list goes on) (...) The best is nervous and very physical style of direction, the skill of the full cast, in almost sadomasochistic relationship between the poor dancer who wants to be perfect and his mentor that makes you let go and surprised herself, not only on stage of course. The worst ever in hallucinations violent attack which the dancer (...) But the American movie this year is likely to be the Achilles heel of the Venice Film Festival. "(Fabio Ferzetti, 'Il Messaggero', September 2, 2010)
